There and Back
This rugged route begins at the Long Trail trailhead on US Hwy 4 and climbs steadily through dense hardwood and conifer forest typical of central Vermont. The trail follows the white-blazed Long Trail southward, which coincides with the Appalachian Trail in this section. Early in the hike, expect a mix of moderate grades and rocky footing, with intermittent stream crossings and occasional boardwalks through wet sections. Around a quarter of the way in, the route steepens noticeably as it gains elevation along switchbacks and stone steps.
Once on the ridgeline, the trail intersects Sherburne Pass Trail and Bucklin Trail on its way to Killington Peak. The final stretch includes steep, rocky terrain and some scrambling, especially near the summit ridge. The summit itself sits above treeline and offers expansive views of the surrounding Green Mountains, with clear-day visibility extending into New Hampshire and New York. After soaking in the views, return along the same trail. This is one of the more challenging day hikes in the Green Mountains but offers an excellent payoff for those prepared for variable terrain and weather.
