This route climbs steadily from Gifford Woods State Park into Green Mountain National Forest. From the trailhead, follow the well-defined path through dense northern hardwood forest. The tread is rocky and can be slick after rain, with frequent roots and short, steep pitches. As you gain elevation, the forest thickens and the trail winds past mossy boulder fields that mark the transition to higher ground.
Stay on the main trail at all junctions; subtle side paths appear along the way but are typically used for dispersed camping or wildlife access. The route tops out at a high point marked by a large, weathered cairn—the trail’s namesake—set in a quiet clearing surrounded by evergreens. This point offers a peaceful break spot before retracing your steps back to the trailhead. Though not long or technical, the Pesky Cairn Trail rewards hikers with solitude and classic Green Mountain terrain.
