Description
The Kent Brook Loop begins and ends at the Gifford Woods State Park trailhead, making a full circuit through a dense hardwood forest dominated by mature sugar maples. From the trailhead, hikers quickly enter shaded woodland with occasional stream crossings and gentle elevation changes. The route passes several interpretive signs that highlight forest ecology and the region’s natural history. Shortly into the hike, stay right at the first trail junction to follow the loop clockwise. The terrain includes exposed roots and slick rocks, especially after rainfall, so careful footing is recommended. Roughly halfway around the loop, a short spur offers access to the nearby Long Trail/Appalachian Trail junction, connecting this route to broader thru-hiking networks. The canopy opens in places to reveal colorful fall foliage in season, making this one of the best autumn day hikes in central Vermont. The route returns to the starting point via a gradual descent through mixed forest. This moderate loop is especially rewarding during foliage season and offers a peaceful woodland experience within the park.
