Description
This moderate route begins at the Deer Leap Trailhead, located just behind the Inn at the Long Trail off U.S. Route 4. Head north on the Deer Leap Trail through a shaded hardwood forest, climbing gradually with occasional rocky sections. After a short distance, reach a marked spur leading to the Deer Leap Overlook. Take this brief side trip for wide views across the Route 4 corridor and Pico Peak before returning to the main trail. Back on the Deer Leap Trail, continue north as it climbs toward the wooded summit of Deer Leap Mountain. The route then bends east, eventually intersecting with the Appalachian Trail. Turn right (south) onto the Appalachian Trail and begin a steady descent through dense forest back to the trailhead. Expect slippery roots and rocks in wet weather, and bring sufficient water—streams are seasonal and unreliable. This route offers a classic Green Mountains experience with rewarding views and varied terrain.
