Point to Point
This moderate to challenging route begins and ends at the Deer Leap Trailhead off U.S. Route 4 near Sherburne Pass. The route starts on the Deer Leap Trail, climbing steadily through mixed hardwood forest toward the open ledges of Deer Leap Overlook. From the overlook, hikers enjoy wide views of Pico Peak, the Killington Valley, and distant ridgelines to the east.
After the overlook, continue climbing to meet the Appalachian Trail. Follow the AT along a rolling ridgeline. The forest here transitions between hardwoods and spruce, offering varied terrain and occasional glimpses through the trees. Eventually the segment winds downhill along rocky and occasionally muddy tread, especially after rain. Be prepared for slippery roots and limited water sources — seasonal streams may flow in wetter months, but filtering is necessary. Wildlife sightings are possible throughout the route, including moose, black bear, and whitetail deer. To finish the route, reconnect with the highway at the Appalachian Trailhead, then follow the road east back to Deer Leap Trailhead. This Green Mountain National Forest route is best from late spring through fall, with peak foliage in October and snowshoe access possible in winter.
