Description
This point-to-point segment of the Long Trail begins at the Appalachian Trail parking area near Clarendon Gorge on VT-103 and ends at Sunnyside Shelter. Starting with a dramatic footbridge crossing over Clarendon Gorge, the trail quickly climbs through mixed hardwood and conifer forest to the ridgeline. From there, the route continues south on the white-blazed Long Trail, gaining and losing elevation steadily along rugged terrain. The trail maintains a moderate to challenging grade, with brief steep sections and occasional rock scrambles requiring careful footing. Intermittent water sources may be dry late in the season. Keep an eye out for moose or bear sign, especially in lower forested areas. The route finishes at Sunnyside Shelter, a designated camping area nestled in a quiet woodland setting. This segment rewards hikers with varied terrain, solitude, and sweeping views typical of the best day hikes in the Green Mountains.
