There and Back
This moderate to challenging route begins at the White Rocks Picnic Area and climbs steadily into the Green Mountain National Forest. Follow the Keewaydin Trail through dense hardwood forest, passing a small seasonal waterfall and stream before reaching the route’s namesake boulder field—a striking jumble of quartzite slabs nestled in a cool, shaded ravine. From here, continue south on the Long Trail, gaining elevation as the path climbs through mixed woods and over occasional rocky outcrops.
At a signed junction, turn right onto the spur trail leading to White Rocks Cliff. The short side trail leads to a dramatic overlook perched high above the Valley of Vermont, with views stretching westward across farmland, forest, and distant ridgelines. While the return follows the same path, the terrain and scenery vary enough to keep the hike engaging in both directions. Expect limited water past the Ice Beds and be alert for wildlife, especially moose and black bears. This rewarding day hike in the Green Mountains delivers classic Vermont terrain and far-reaching views.
