Description
Starting at the Long Trail trailhead on VT Route 140 east of Wallingford, this route follows the white-blazed Long Trail north through dense hardwood forest and rolling terrain. After an initial gradual climb, the trail steepens as it ascends Bear Mountain’s southern slopes. Around halfway, the path crosses a seasonal stream, often the last reliable water source before the summit. Continue climbing through conifer stands and over rocky tread as the grade increases, with occasional partial views through breaks in the canopy. At the top, Bear Mountain offers a wooded summit with limited but worthwhile vantage points to the north and west, especially in late fall when leaves are down. Wildlife sightings—including deer, moose, and black bear—are possible along this remote stretch of trail. Return along the same route to the VT Route 140 trailhead.
