There and Back
This short section of the Long Trail begins at the Clarendon Gorge Trailhead on VT-103 and heads north and east toward the Clarendon Shelter near Wallingford, Vermont. Right from the start there's an optional detour south to the dramatic suspension bridge over Mill River, offering a unique vantage into the steep-walled gorge below. After the bridge, turn north and cross the highway to start. The route climbs steadily through dense hardwood forest typical of the Green Mountains. The trail surface is rocky in places, with a few brief steep sections that require careful footing, especially in wet conditions.
After a short distance, the trail levels out and passes through mixed forest before reaching the Clarendon Shelter. This site serves both section and through-hikers and is located just off the main trail. Water is available seasonally from nearby streams, but purification is necessary. Moose and black bear sightings occasionally occur in this area, so follow Leave No Trace principles and proper food storage practices. In summer, black flies and mosquitoes can be persistent. This route is a quick but scenic way to experience a classic Long Trail segment with minimal commitment.
