Loop
Charley’s Loop begins across the street from the Visitor Center at Purgatory Chasm State Reservation in Massachusetts. From the trailhead, follow signs toward the Chasm Trail and pick up the yellow-blazed Charley’s Loop Trail on the right as it curves up along the rim of the chasm. This portion of the route includes rocky ledges and uneven terrain. At the far end of the loop, the route transitions into a more gradual section along an old forest road, winding through typical New England hardwoods with gentler footing.
Hikers can complete the loop in either direction, though following the rim first allows for a steady progression from rugged features to quieter woods. Be cautious near drop-offs, especially when surfaces are wet or icy, and note that the chasm area may close seasonally for safety. There are no reliable water sources along the route, and ticks are common in warmer months. The varied terrain and dramatic geology make this a standout among easy hikes near Worcester.
