Description
The Stannard Peak Trail begins at a small roadside pull-off on Stannard Mountain Road, just northwest of Stannard Pond. From the trailhead, the route climbs steadily through dense northern hardwood forest, weaving around glacial erratics and moss-covered ledges. The path is often faint and unmarked, requiring attentive navigation and a reliable map or GPS. Early in the ascent, hikers may pass a few seasonal brooks, but the most reliable water source is Stannard Pond halfway out. After passing the pond, the trail steepens for a brief climb. Wildlife sightings are common in this quiet zone of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom—look for warblers, moose sign, or even black bears. Near the summit, partial views open to the west through gaps in the trees, making the climb worthwhile. The route returns the same way, with backcountry camping allowed in accordance with Leave No Trace practices.
