The Paddock Hill Trail begins near the Long Pond trailhead, just off Paddock Hill Road south of Barton, Vermont. From the trailhead, the route first drops down to the lakeshore, then climbs steadily through a dense canopy of northern hardwoods. The path is moderately graded but includes some rocky footing as it gains elevation. As the trail ascends, the forest opens in places to offer glimpses of the surrounding Willoughby State Forest, with occasional views east toward the dramatic cut of Willoughby Gap.
This route ends near the upper ridgeline of Paddock Hill, where a pause rewards hikers with a quiet, remote feel uncommon in more trafficked areas of northern Vermont. Wildlife sightings—including moose and black bear—are possible in this less-visited corner of the state. Primitive camping is allowed in designated areas, but there are no reliable water sources along the trail. Snowshoes are recommended in winter if attempting this hike when the access road is unplowed. With its peaceful woodlands and big-mountain feel, this trail offers one of the more rewarding day hikes in Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom.
