Loop
The St. Johnsbury Municipal Forest Outer Loop begins and ends at the main trailhead on Almshouse Road, just outside downtown St. Johnsbury, Vermont. This easy to moderate route follows a combination of the Red, Yellow, and Blue Trails to form a continuous loop through mature mixed hardwoods and softwoods. Starting from the kiosk, follow the Red Trail northwest and continue onto the Yellow Trail. Stay left at subsequent forks to stay on the outer loop, then connect to the Blue Trail to complete the circuit back toward the trailhead.
This route includes gentle climbs and descents over rolling hills, with occasional roots and rocks requiring sure footing in wet conditions. Seasonal streams may cross the trail, but there are no reliable water sources. The forest is known for its quiet atmosphere, interpretive signage, and the chance to spot wildlife like deer and turkey. Dogs are welcome on leash, and the route is suitable for snowshoeing in winter. This is a great option for low-elevation hiking near St. Johnsbury with easy navigation and year-round appeal.
