There and Back
The Burke Mountain Red Trail begins at the Red Trail trailhead at Burke Mountain Ski Resort. This steady uphill route climbs through a mixed hardwood forest, following a wide path that quickly narrows into a classic New England hiking trail—rocky, root-filled, and moderately challenging. After an initial incline, the trail continues to climb consistently, crossing ski runs and old access roads. There are no major junctions, but hikers should watch for trail markers and signage as the route winds toward the summit.
At the top of Burke Mountain, a short spur leads to a historic fire tower that offers sweeping views of Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom and the surrounding mountain ranges. The return follows the same route back to the trailhead. Moose, black bear, and owls are occasionally spotted along this quiet, forested route. Be prepared for changing weather near the summit and bring all necessary water, as there are no reliable sources along the trail. This route is best suited for hikers with moderate fitness looking for a rewarding summit hike in northern Vermont.
