Point to Point
This moderate route begins at the main trailhead near the campground in New Discovery State Park and heads east then south toward Big Deer Mountain. After a steady climb through mixed hardwood forest, the trail steepens before reaching the summit, where hikers are rewarded with broad views across Groton State Forest. From the top, descend south along the ridge, then curve west to meet the Osmore Pond Trail near the shoreline.
The route continues along the west edge of Osmore Pond, following a flat, wooded path with chances to spot beaver activity and songbirds. Moose sightings are also possible in the low-lying forest and wetlands nearby. The trail loops north to return to the campground, completing the circuit. Seasonal streams may offer water early in the year, but all sources require filtration. This is a peaceful and rewarding option for day hikes in Groton State Forest, with both summit views and waterside walking.
