Description
This moderate hiking route begins in New Discovery State Park at a marked trailhead near the parking area off Vermont Route 232. From the start, follow signs for the Owl’s Head Trail as it heads into the forest on a gradual climb. After a short distance, the trail reaches a junction; stay on the trail. The path winds through mixed hardwoods and spruce, passing mossy boulders and occasional granite outcrops. Near the top, continue on the side trail to the stone shelter and summit overlook. The final stretch climbs steeply up a granite staircase to reach the open summit area, where hikers are rewarded with wide-ranging views across Groton State Forest, including Kettle Pond and nearby ridgelines. The return follows the same route back to the trailhead. This trail is especially scenic in early October when the fall foliage is at its peak.
