There and Back
This out-and-back along a segment of the Long Trail begins at the Hazen’s Notch Trailhead and climbs gradually through dense northern hardwood forest. The route weaves along a quiet ridgeline, where the trail becomes steeper and rockier in sections. After the initial ascent, hikers will encounter a mix of terrain—rolling wooded stretches, uneven rock underfoot, and short, punchy climbs typical of the northern Green Mountains.
Roughly halfway along the route, the trail passes intermittent seasonal streams, but reliable water is limited, especially on the ridge—carry what you need. Near the summit of Buchanan Mountain, hikers will find brief openings in the trees offering partial views to the east. This stretch of trail sees lighter foot traffic than many other parts of the Long Trail, making it a good choice for experienced hikers seeking solitude and backcountry travel. Be prepared for muddy sections, especially after rain, and follow bear-aware camping practices if staying overnight.
