The Belvidere to Tillotson trail begins at the Long Trail Trailhead on Belvidere Road and ends at the Tillotson Trailhead on Tillotson Road near Lowell. From the start, the route climbs steadily to Mt. Belvidere, where a summit fire tower offers sweeping views across the northern Green Mountains. After descending the summit, the route follows a rugged section of the Long Trail along a remote ridgeline towards Tillotson Peak. Along the way you will pass Frank Post Trail. Either start your descent or continue to Tillotson Peak then backtrack here. This last segment descends through dense boreal forest toward Tillotson Trailhead.
Expect intermittent water sources and minimal cell service throughout. The route’s elevation gain, slick rocks, and muddy conditions can make footing challenging, especially after rain. This traverse is best tackled between late May and October, with winter travel requiring snowshoes or skis. The route rewards experienced hikers with solitude, diverse terrain, and some of the best panoramic views in the northern Greens.
