Starting from the Long Trail Trailhead on VT-118, this rugged route follows the Babcock Trail through a dense northern hardwood forest before connecting with the Long Trail where the route turns south. Hikers begin with a steady climb past seasonal stream crossings, reaching a junction with the Long Trail where the route turns south. Shortly beyond, the path enters Devil’s Gulch—a striking ravine of moss-covered cliffs, slick rock, and towering boulders that demand careful footing and occasional hand-assisted scrambling. The cool, shaded chasm often holds damp conditions, especially after rain.
After navigating the gulch, the route returns on the Long Trail through boreal forest habitat known for spring wildflowers and moose sign. Primitive camping is permitted along the route, but fires are discouraged to protect the fragile ecosystem. This route offers a rewarding mix of solitude, natural features, and moderate challenge. It's best hiked during the dry months between late May and October.
