Loop
This rugged backcountry route begins at a trailhead off Tillotson Road, north of Belvidere, Vermont, and connects the Frank Post Trail, Long Trail, and Forester Trail in a scenic, remote loop. From the trailhead, climb steadily through hardwood forest along the Frank Post Trail to reach the Long Trail near Tillotson Camp, a primitive shelter available for overnight use. Turning north, the route ascends to the wooded summit of Tillotson Peak, where filtered views and moose sign mark a quiet highpoint. From the peak, head back south on the Long Trail to Belvidere Mountain, the loop’s high point, where a restored fire tower offers expansive views across the Green Mountains and into Quebec.
After descending from Belvidere, turn east onto the Forester Trail. This long descent winds through mixed forest and crosses seasonal streams before returning to Tillotson Road. Expect slick rock and mud in wet conditions, and plan to filter water from natural sources. The loop is best completed from late spring through fall, when access roads are open and trails are mostly snow-free. This route rewards strong hikers with summit views, wildlife sightings, and a true northern Vermont backcountry experience.
