There and Back
This rugged section of the Long Trail begins at Hazen's Notch Trailhead and follows the main route south along a densely forested ridgeline toward Haystack Mountain. From the trailhead, the route climbs steadily through mixed hardwood and conifer forest, passing occasional clearings and seasonal streams. The route crosses rocky steps and slick roots requiring careful footing, especially in wet weather.
Near the summit of Haystack Mountain, the forest opens briefly to provide expansive views of the northern Green Mountains and surrounding valleys. Return to the trailhead via the same route. Seasonal water sources can be found at low points along the trail, but all water should be treated. Moose and black bear sightings are possible in this remote area; use bear-safe food practices and stay alert. This hike offers a rewarding backcountry experience with forest solitude and high-elevation scenery.
