There and Back
The Jay Peak Trail begins from the signed trailhead in Jay State Forest, just off VT Hwy. 242. From the start, the route climbs steadily through dense mixed hardwood forest. Early on, hikers may notice small seasonal streams near the lower trail section—helpful for cooling off in warmer months but not reliable for drinking water. Around halfway up, the forest transitions to a more coniferous zone, with glimpses of Jay Peak’s rocky summit ridge through the trees.
As the trail gains elevation, the grade steepens noticeably. Near the top, hikers encounter a short section of rocky scrambles with some exposed Class 2–3 terrain. Caution is advised, especially during wet conditions when rocks can become slick. Above treeline, the route passes through a compact alpine krummholz zone before topping out at the Jay Peak summit. The summit offers panoramic views of the northern Green Mountains, Lake Memphremagog, and the rolling hills of southern Québec. This short but challenging route rewards with a true alpine experience and a striking vista at the top.
