There and Back
This rugged section of the Long Trail begins at the trailhead on VT Route 105 near the U.S.–Canada border. From the trailhead, the route climbs gradually through dense northern hardwood forest before steepening about halfway in. As the trail gains elevation, it transitions into a spruce–fir zone with increased roots, rocky tread, and occasional muddy patches, especially after rain.
Stay on the main Long Trail as it winds steadily uphill, avoiding faint herd paths along the way. Near the final ascent, the trail becomes steeper and more technical, with short ledgy sections that may be slick in wet conditions. The summit of Carleton Mountain offers partial views, including glimpses into Quebec and toward the Jay Peak area. This quiet stretch of trail rarely sees heavy foot traffic, making it a good choice for hikers seeking solitude on one of the least-traveled sections of the Long Trail.
