The Big Reed Pond Route begins from the main trailhead at Montauk County Park, just off East Lake Drive. From the parking area, follow the wide forest path north toward the pond, keeping right at the first Y-intersection to stay on the main route. The trail winds through mixed hardwood forest and occasional cedar groves before reaching a long boardwalk across a wetland section. Continue past several short side paths leading to pond overlooks, then curve left as the route skirts the shoreline. The trail crosses gentle terrain with minimal elevation change and passes through shaded sections rich with birdlife—ospreys, herons, and deer are common sights.
Beyond the far side of the pond, the route veers west through a drier forest corridor before looping south toward the trailhead. Watch for interpretive signs near a nearby Native American archaeological site before rejoining the main path back to the parking area. With its quiet woodland scenery and coastal ecosystem views, this easy route offers a relaxing day hike for anyone exploring Montauk’s inland preserves.
