The Shadmoor State Preserve Trail begins from a small parking area off Montauk Highway on Long Island’s eastern tip. This novice-friendly route offers a network of wide, sandy trails and narrower footpaths that wind through native shrubland and open meadows before reaching high ocean bluffs. At several Y-intersections, hikers can veer toward short spurs that lead to wooden observation decks perched above the Atlantic. Along the way, two preserved World War II-era concrete bunkers offer a glimpse into the area’s military past.
The trail system allows for a short circuit or longer out-and-back options depending on which spurs are explored. Trail signs are limited, but most junctions are intuitive and the terrain remains flat and easy to navigate. Leashed dogs are welcome, and the area is popular for birdwatching—especially during spring and fall migrations. There are no water sources, and summer visitors should prepare for ticks and exposed sun. The final reward is a series of panoramic coastal views, with sea cliffs and salt spray marking one of the best short day hikes near Montauk.
