Loop
Starting from the main parking area near the Hither Hills campground, this route follows a network of signed trails through the varied terrain of Hither Hills State Park near Montauk. To hike the full outer loop, begin on the Old North Road Trail heading north, then turn west toward the dunes on the Walking Dunes Trail which wraps around the peninsula, eventually heading northeast. Around the halfway mark, the trail gradually turns south and west through dense pine barrens, reconnecting with the starting area near the campground. Several junctions allow for shorter variations, but staying on the outermost trails offers the most continuous experience of the park’s backcountry terrain.
Expect mostly flat trail with occasional sandy stretches, exposed dune ridgelines, and sections of forest with roots underfoot. Wildlife sightings are common, especially deer and migratory birds, and there are several quiet overlooks with views of the Atlantic Ocean. Facilities and potable water are available only at the campground, so come prepared with adequate supplies. This route is best enjoyed spring through fall, with fall foliage offering extra visual reward.
