This scenic route begins near Napeague Harbor off Montauk Highway in Amagansett, NY, and forms a quiet, undeveloped circuit through Napeague State Park. From the informal trailhead, follow sandy paths south through maritime forest and shrubland, keeping right at the first Y-intersection to approach the ocean. The route eventually opens onto a wide stretch of remote beachfront, offering long views along the Atlantic and excellent birdwatching, especially during spring and fall migrations. Continue east along the sand, then veer north into low dunes and salt marsh. Trail segments here can be faint or overgrown—stay alert and watch for signs of recent foot traffic. Complete the route by rejoining the inland path near the initial junction.
This trail sees light use and little maintenance, making it ideal for hikers seeking solitude on the South Fork. Expect ticks, sandy footing, and minimal signage, but the payoff is a peaceful shoreline hike with abundant wildlife.
