There and Back
This rugged out-and-back route on the Long Trail begins at Brandon Gap on VT Route 73 and climbs steadily into the Breadloaf Wilderness. The trail enters dense mixed forest and gains elevation quickly, passing through rocky terrain and pockets of spruce and fir. A short distance in, hikers reach the junction to Great Cliff, a short detour offering excellent views. After Great Cliff, the trail follows a scenic ridgeline with occasional openings that provide long views to the west. The trail climbs on a short but steep stretch to Mount Horrid, offering panoramic views and a rewarding high point.
Expect moderately strenuous hiking, especially near the spur trail and in wet or muddy conditions. Wildlife sightings, particularly moose, are possible in this remote and quiet zone. Water sources are seasonal and limited, so bring a filtration method. This route is best hiked from late spring through early fall, when trail conditions are most reliable and the ridgeline is free of snow.
