This moderate route begins at the Silver Lake Trailhead near Branbury State Park. From the parking area, follow the Silver Lake Trail on a steady climb through mixed hardwood forest to reach the lake’s northern shore. After arriving at the lakeside, continue around the well-defined path that loops around Silver Lake. The loop can be hiked in either direction, but head east to reach the campground. Along the way, the trail winds through wooded slopes, crosses seasonal streambeds, and offers consistent views of the water and surrounding hillsides.
The route passes a historic Civilian Conservation Corps-era dam near the lake outlet, a worthwhile stop for a break and photos. Wildlife sightings are common, with moose, loons, and black bears all frequent the area. Dispersed camping is permitted at designated sites, making this route popular for overnight backpacking. The trail can be muddy or slippery in places, with sections of rooted and rocky footing. Return the same way via the Silver Lake Trail to complete the outing. This peaceful forested loop offers scenic views, wildlife encounters, and excellent fall color.
