Begin this moderate route at the Silver Lake South Trailhead, located in the Green Mountain National Forest near the shores of Silver Lake. The trail climbs gradually through hardwood forest with early views of the water. Turn onto Rattlesnake Cliffs Trail, and stay on the trail past Aunt Jenny Trail to begin a steeper ascent toward the cliffs.
After a sustained uphill section, reach another junction with the Aunt Jenny Trail. Continue on toward Rattlesnake Point, where the trail narrows and becomes rockier. The final approach traverses exposed terrain near high cliff edges—use caution, especially in wet or icy conditions. At the end of the route, dramatic viewpoints overlook Lake Dunmore and the Champlain Valley, with possible sightings of peregrine falcons circling the cliffs. Backtrack to Aunt Jenny to return. Seasonal streams cross the trail in this section, and the dense forest offers welcome shade during warmer months. This area is a standout among day hikes near Middlebury, especially during peak fall foliage.
