There and Back
This route begins near the Chapel Brook Reservation parking area off Williamsburg Road and heads west on D.A.R. Trail. It climbs steadily through a shaded forest of hemlock and hardwoods before reaching steeper terrain near Pony Mountain. A short distance from the trailhead, turn right on Summit Trail. From there, expect moderate Class 2 hiking with rocky sections and light scrambling over exposed granite slabs. Near the summit, several spur trails offer optional short loops and lead to rock climbing areas along the cliff faces. Use caution around steep ledges and uneven outcrops, especially in wet or icy conditions.
From the open summit, hikers are rewarded with broad views across the surrounding hill country of western Massachusetts. On the return, follow the same trail back to the parking area. Hikers seeking a longer outing can continue west on D.A.R. Trail to connect with Moose Run Trail in D.A.R. State Forest. This moderate route is open year-round, but winter conditions may make upper sections icy and hazardous. Dogs are allowed on leash, and rock climbing is permitted in designated areas. No reliable water is available—bring your own.
