The Shelburne Falls Fire Tower Trail begins at a kiosk on the uphill side of Halligan Avenue at its junction with Route 2 in the town of Shelburne. From the trailhead, the route climbs steadily through hardwood forest, marked by interpretive signage and tree identification tags along the lower section. The ascent is steep in places, with rocky tread and occasional muddy sections depending on season. About halfway up, the grade intensifies as the trail winds toward the summit of Massaemett Mountain. The stone fire tower at the top dates back to 1909 and, while the cab is closed, hikers can ascend the stairwell to take in expansive views across Massachusetts, Vermont, and New Hampshire.
From the summit, hikers may return the way they came or continue north on the Ridge Trail toward High Ledges Wildlife Sanctuary, a connection that offers further exploration and scenic overlooks. Dogs are allowed on leash on the lower portion of the route but are not permitted on the upper Ridge Trail segment or within High Ledges Wildlife Sanctuary. This is a steep, forested climb best suited for experienced hikers prepared for variable footing, seasonal insects, and limited parking near the trailhead. The summit tower provides a rewarding goal with wide-reaching views of the surrounding region.
