Loop
This moderate route begins at the parking area near the entrance to the campground road, just past the D.A.R. State Forest contact station. From the parking area, follow the campground road a short distance north before turning left onto the Long Trail, winding through mixed hardwood and pine forest along the western edge of Upper Highland Lake. The trail offers occasional lake views through the trees and remains relatively level before gradually climbing toward higher ground.
At a signed junction, turn right onto the Hemlock Trail to begin the return leg. This short connector passes through dense stands of its namesake trees and descends gently toward the campground. When the Hemlock Trail ends, turn right on the campground road to return to the starting point. Trail signage may be limited in some areas, so staying on the blazed path is advised. This route rewards hikers with quiet forest walking, a variety of wooded terrain, and glimpses of lakeside scenery.
