This moderate route begins at the campground entrance parking area near Upper Highland Lake in D.A.R. State Forest, just outside Goshen, Massachusetts. Head north on the campground road a short distance and turn left onto the Long Trail, travelling through a mix of hardwood and conifer forest, gradually climbing toward Moore Hill Road. Along the way, hikers encounter occasional wet areas, small stream crossings, and several junctions—some with worn signage—so carrying a map or using GPS is recommended. Cross Moore Hill Road and follow the path a short distance to the high point of the route. The historic fire tower offers a sweeping view of the surrounding hilltowns and wooded ridges. From there, continue on Darling Trail to return to the lake and campground area. Alternatively, hikers can take the NEMBA Trail from the fire tower, connect back to Moore Hill Road, and follow it south to the parking area.
This year-round route is popular for day hikes in western Massachusetts, especially in fall. Snow, ice, and mud are common in winter and spring. Upper Highland Lake offers a peaceful spot to cool off or relax at the end of the hike.
