Loop
The Petticoat Reservation Loop begins from a small roadside pull-off on Petticoat Hill Road, a short distance uphill from Route 9 in Williamsburg, MA. From the trailhead, follow Summit Trail and bear right at the first intersection. The route climbs steadily through second-growth forest dominated by hardwoods and scattered hemlocks. Early on, hikers pass remnants of the hill’s farming past, including moss-covered stone walls and the foundations of old homesites.
The route continues along the marked Summit Loop, gaining elevation through a series of switchbacks and short, steep sections before transitioning onto Locke’s Loop. At this junction, hikers may also return downhill via Summit Trail for a shorter option. Near the high point, limited views open up—especially in late fall and winter—toward surrounding ridges and the valley below. Most of Locke’s Loop crosses land managed by the Williamsburg Woodland Trails Committee; remain on the marked route to respect private property. The trail descends gradually back to the trailhead along the opposite side of both trails. While short, the elevation gain and uneven footing add to the challenge. This is a quiet choice for short day hikes in Western Massachusetts, especially appealing to those interested in forest restoration, local history, and bird-watching.
