Loop
This moderate hiking route begins from the Sanctuary Road entrance of Massachusetts Audubon’s High Ledges Wildlife Sanctuary. Start by hiking along Sanctuary Road onto the Dutch and Mary Barnard Trail. Turn left onto the North Trail and continue uphill. Stay left at the junction with the Wolves’ Den Loop Trail. This section follows a rocky ridgeline with short scrambles, passing geological formations, rock overhangs, and cave-like features tied to the local “Wolves’ Den” legend. After rejoining the Dutch and Mary Barnard Trail, stay left at the next junction. A short distance later, turn left onto the Waterthrush Trail, which descends gradually through mixed forest and wetland edges back to the starting point.
The combined route passes vernal pools, bog bridges, and lush wetland margins—especially scenic in spring when wildflowers and ferns are abundant. Connecting trails along the way allow for shorter routes if desired. The trail also skirts the old stone chimneys of the Barnard house remains near a ledge with partial views. Expect occasional slippery footing, particularly on rock scrambles and in wet conditions.
