The Mount Toby Trail begins at the Robert Frost Trailhead on Reservation Road in Sunderland. From the parking area, head south on Tower Road, a wide gravel track that gradually climbs into mixed hardwood forest. After a short distance, Tower Road merges with the Robert Frost Trail—stay right to continue north on the Robert Frost Trail as it winds uphill toward the summit of Mount Toby. The climb is steady but manageable, passing rocky ledges, fern-covered slopes, and through dense canopy.
Near the top, a short side path leads to the Mount Toby fire tower, which offers panoramic views of the Connecticut River Valley and surrounding hills. Mount Toby is recognized for its ecological diversity, including rare plant species and habitats that support a wide range of birds and mammals. After enjoying the summit, continue north on the Robert Frost Trail before descending and turning right onto the Blue Trail. This narrower path drops through steeper terrain—watch for loose gravel and roots, especially in wet or leaf-covered conditions. At the junction with Tower Road, turn left and follow it back to the trailhead. This moderate route pairs classic New England forest scenery with a rewarding climb and far-reaching views.
