There and Back
This route begins at Black Swamp Trailhead on Shrewsbury Road and climbs steadily through dense hardwoods and mixed spruce-fir forest toward the summit of Shrewsbury Peak. The trail is lightly trafficked and minimally signed, requiring careful navigation—map and compass or GPS are strongly recommended. Early on, hikers cross seasonal streams near the trailhead before beginning a sustained climb. Around halfway, the canopy begins to shift, and the trail steepens over rockier footing. From this point forward, there are no reliable water sources. Continue uphill along the ridgeline until reaching the summit, where expansive views open up across the Green Mountains.
The return follows the same route back to the trailhead. This is a remote hike with a true backcountry feel, ideal for experienced hikers seeking solitude and summit views.
