Loop
The Slack Hill Trail begins near the eastern edge of Calvin Coolidge State Park, accessible from the main entrance off VT-100A. From the trailhead, the route climbs steadily through mixed hardwood forest, where uneven tread and modest elevation gain create a moderately challenging hike. Depending on your route choice, you can either follow the loop around Slack Hill and return via the road, or return along the same trail.
Junctions within the park trail network are marked, but map awareness is essential—especially when leaves obscure the tread. Occasional openings in the canopy offer limited views of nearby hills, particularly in early spring or late fall. While the trail remains close to park facilities, it maintains a remote feel, with birdlife and seasonal foliage as key highlights. Primitive camping is allowed in designated areas, and leashed dogs are welcome. Be prepared for muddy conditions, slick leaves, and ticks during warmer months. The reward is a quiet, shaded trail experience tucked into central Vermont’s forested uplands.
