There and Back
This short route begins near the day-use area at Camp Plymouth State Park and climbs gently through mixed hardwood forest toward a scenic ridgeline above Echo Lake. The trail follows a clear footpath with some uneven footing and mild elevation gain, making it suitable for most hikers. After a short distance, the forest opens up to an overlook with wide views of Echo Lake below and Hawk Mountain rising in the distance.
During fall, the trail is especially popular for its colorful foliage and peaceful setting away from busier routes. Expect occasional mud and slick roots, especially after rainfall. The route is also accessible for snowshoeing in winter, though conditions vary. This is a rewarding and accessible day hike in central Vermont for those seeking lake views without a strenuous climb.
