The Hardwood Swamp Trail begins from the West parking area at Black Creek Park on Green St, just past the park entrance. This well-marked route travels through a mix of dense hardwood forest and lowland wetlands, following wide, mostly flat footpaths and boardwalks. Hikers can follow the clearly signed trail clockwise or counterclockwise; both options offer similar terrain and scenery.
Interpretive signs along the route provide insight into the swamp’s ecology and local wildlife. In spring and after heavy rain, sections of the trail may be muddy or partially flooded, and insect activity can be high. While the trail stays close to the starting point throughout, the thick forest and wetland surroundings offer a surprising sense of seclusion. Keep an eye out for deer, frogs, and songbirds along the way. This is a great option for low-key day hikes near Rochester, especially for families or beginner hikers.
