Point to Point
Starting from the main parking lot at Taconic Mountains Ramble State Park off St. Johns Road in Hubbardton, this route combines Alyssa’s Trail, the Gardens Trail, and South Meadow Trail into a varied hike with forest, meadow, and ridge terrain. Head west on Alyssa’s Trail, climbing gradually through mixed hardwoods to reach a high point at Mt Zion, where a scenic overlook provides wide views across the Taconic Mountains. From there, descend to the Gardens Trail, passing through a landscaped area with stone paths and a Japanese garden feature.
At the next junction, turn south onto South Meadow Trail to cross open fields and wildflower-studded meadows, with good opportunities for birdwatching. Small seasonal streams may be visible near this section, but no potable water is available, so carry all you need. Return to the trailhead by following the route back toward the Gardens junction, completing the loop. This route is best from late spring through fall, though some trails may be muddy after rain. Expect ticks and mosquitoes in warm months, and note that dogs are not allowed on Alyssa or Gardens trails. The combination of forested hills and open meadows makes this one of the most scenic day hikes in the Taconic Mountains.
