The Potash Mountain Trail begins at the Harris Preserve parking area on Potash Road near Lake Luzerne, NY. The route starts with a mellow walk through the preserve’s lower forest, where a short side loop offers interpretive signage and a chance to explore the area’s natural history. Continuing on the main trail, hikers encounter a steady climb that transitions from conservation land onto New York State-managed forest. At roughly halfway, the route begins to ascend more steeply, with stone steps, switchbacks, and a few short rock scrambles as it approaches the summit.
The final stretch emerges onto a wide, open rock face, offering sweeping views of the surrounding Adirondack foothills and glimpses of Lake Luzerne and Fourth Lake below. While well-constructed, the upper trail can be slick in wet or icy conditions, especially where leaves or snow cover the stone. Dogs are allowed on leash in the preserve section, but camping and fires are prohibited throughout. This short but rewarding route offers a satisfying climb and a standout summit for day hikes in the southern Adirondacks.
