The Leon M. Steves Big Bay Preserve begins from a small parking area off Division Street in Queensbury. From the trailhead, hikers can follow a network of easy, well-marked singletrack paths that wind through forest, wetlands, and along the scenic shoreline of both Clendon Brook and the Hudson River. Trails branch off and reconnect throughout the preserve, offering options for shorter or longer outings depending on the route chosen.
At the first junction near the trailhead, keep right to follow the Yellow Trail along the edge of the woods. After a short distance, the trail curves toward the river, passing several quiet spots ideal for birdwatching or taking in views of the water. At the next fork, stay right to continue a gentle loop through mixed hardwood forest and sandy lowlands. In wetter seasons, expect sections of the trail to be muddy or buggy, especially near the brook. Trails are open year-round and also accommodate snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter conditions.
This route offers a relaxed pace and easy terrain, making it a reliable option for nature walks, family outings, and birding close to the Hudson River.
