This gentle hiking route begins at the Big Bend Preserve parking area off Old Bend Road, near the Town of Moreau. From the trailhead, follow signs into the Whispering Pines Trail to begin a wide, mostly flat circuit through open pine barrens and mixed hardwood forest. Early in the hike, you'll pass through dry uplands before gradually descending into wetter terrain. Stay alert at junctions where the River Walk Trail branches off— keep left to follow the shoreline and skirt the edge of the Hudson River.
This stretch offers expansive water views and access to riverside birding areas. Continue through lowland marshes and shaded forest corridors, watching for songbirds and waterfowl along the way. The loop reconnects with the Big Bend Barrens trail for the final return through the interior of Big Bend Preserve. Although the terrain is easygoing, insects and ticks are common near wetlands, so long sleeves and repellent are recommended.
With its mix of habitats, riverside scenery, and year-round access, this is one of the best easy day hikes in the southern Adirondack foothills.
