Loop
The Galway Preserve Loop begins at the Crane Road entrance in the Town of Galway and forms a gentle circuit through conserved forest and wetland habitat. From the trailhead, follow the main path into a mixed woodland once used as a Christmas tree farm, where rows of pine and fir still stand. The route crosses several footbridges and skirts the edge of a small pond before curving past old stonework and a dilapidated cabin—remnants of the land’s former owners. Trails are mostly flat with only slight elevation changes, but some sections can become muddy or overgrown, especially in spring and after heavy rain.
Ideal for birdwatching and short outings year-round, this trail supports snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter. With over 100 species recorded, the preserve is popular with birders, particularly near the wetland edges. Dogs are permitted on leash, and visitors should come prepared for wet trail conditions and limited signage. This short but engaging route offers quiet forest walking and a glimpse into the area’s natural and cultural history.
