There and Back
Starting from the main trailhead at Jamaica State Park, this route follows the West River Trail north along a converted railroad bed, offering easy footing and gentle grades through a canopy of dense hardwoods. At a signed junction, turn right onto the Hamilton Falls Trail, where the route begins to climb more steadily through mixed forest. The terrain becomes steeper and rockier as you approach the falls, with uneven footing and wet sections common near the top.
Along the way, hikers pass remnants of the area’s railroad history and enjoy consistent views of the West River. In fall, the forest canopy provides colorful foliage and filtered light along the path. The final stretch leads to Hamilton Falls, a 125-foot cascade surrounded by boulders and a natural pool. While the view is rewarding, the rocks can be slick and dangerous—stay behind safety barriers and avoid climbing near the top of the falls. This moderate route is best hiked between late spring and mid-autumn, when river levels are stable and trail conditions are dry.
