The Townshend Lake Trail begins near the Townshend Dam Recreation Area in southeastern Vermont, with trailhead parking close to the reservoir's eastern edge. This easy route travels through a quiet mixed hardwood forest, offering intermittent views of Townshend Lake and the West River. Early on, the path parallels the dam structure—hikers should observe all signage near restricted zones. The trail gently climbs and descends across low ridgelines before continuing through shaded woodlands.
Ideal for novice hikers and families, the trail features wildlife viewing opportunities, including birds common to the region. Leashed dogs are allowed, and picnic spots near the start make it a relaxing outing. Although water is nearby, it’s not potable—carry your own or plan to treat it. The route returns the same way, offering a chance to enjoy the lake views in reverse.
