The Ledges Overlook Trail begins near the Townshend Dam Recreation Area and follows a steady uphill path into the Green Mountain foothills. From the trailhead, hikers ascend through a mix of hardwood and conifer forest, navigating rocky terrain and short, steep pitches. After a sustained climb, the route reaches an open ledge with sweeping views of Townshend Lake and the West River Valley—a rewarding spot to rest before returning the same way.
This moderate route is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and passes through land shared with the Green Mountain National Forest. Wildlife sightings may include white-tailed deer, porcupines, or barred owls, especially in the early morning or evening. The trail is open year-round, but snow and ice can obscure footing in winter. Carry sufficient water, and use caution on wet or icy sections.
