Loop
The Grout Pond Loop begins and ends at the Grout Pond Day Use Area off Grout Pond Road. From the trailhead, the route heads into a mixed hardwood and spruce-fir forest and quickly reaches the shoreline of Grout Pond. The path follows close to the water in several places, offering open views across the pond and chances to spot loons, beavers, and other birdlife. Small side paths lead to designated campsites and fire rings along the pond’s edge.
The route circles the pond in a generally easy to moderate grade, with a few short rolling climbs and descents through wooded sections. Several small creek crossings appear along the way, usually passable by stepping stones or simple log bridges. In spring and after heavy rains, expect wet and muddy patches. In summer, mosquitoes can be heavy, especially near marshy areas. During winter, the trail becomes a snowshoe and cross-country ski route, though the road to the trailhead may not be plowed. This route offers a peaceful, family-friendly hike with opportunities for overnight camping, wildlife viewing, and quiet pondside rest stops. The loop’s mix of water views and forest walking makes it a rewarding option for an easy outing in the Green Mountain National Forest.
